Nice gadget for a small wireless network

by mexican72 , Sep 14 '03
Pros: Easy to set up, WEP encryption, USB 1.1 hookup.
Cons: User has to be familiar with WiFi networking. Not for dummies.
I got a brand new laptop computer and faced a need to share the Internet connection and files with my desktop. I still use dial-up, and that means that I do not need to use a stand-alone network router unit. I planned to use my desktop running WXP Pro as ...

I bought this card just to try something else out. The Linksys is very small, has a removable base kinda thing that you could mount it like on the back of a laptop screen, or maybe even the dashboard to your car. It even has double stick velco so you...

Pros: Runs solid. Good reception. Simple.

Bad Throughput with Windows XP
by ldowst ,Feb 17 '04
Pros: Easy to use and install
Cons: Won't work well with Windows XP.
Throughput on this becomes bad because Windows Wireless Zero Configuration keeps stopping the network traffic for a few seconds. Problem is with Windows XP.

Have a cable modem connection, and would get anywhere from 1.4M BPS down to 98K BPS. Internet explorer would freeze for a few seconds quite often.

Fix is to either disable Wireless Zero Configuration service AFTER connection (and then re-enable if you have to reboot) or remove this and use a PCI connected Wireless Card.

works with TiVo!
by slathering ,Jan 05 '05
Pros: works with tivo!
Cons: thick cable, 802.11b.
This is one of the few wireless ethernet adapters that works with TiVo series 2. In that regard, setting it up was easy, just plug it in and follow the instructions in the TiVo manual. The cord is a little thick so it sometimes doesn't want to set flat on the table, but such is the nature of USB cabling.

Also, it's only 802.11b, I wish the 802.11g model worked with TiVo.

Nice product bad encryption (WEP)
by msfz751 ,Oct 25 '03
Pros: Easy installation Good integration with WinXp Wireless monitoring tool Drivers in Linksys
Cons: WEP doesn't work. A major issue if data security is a concern in your network.
I bought this product some months ago and was amazed how easy it can be installed in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I bought many of these for my company, recomended to friends and for home. At home, when I chose to install WEP or wireless encryption was not succesful. I thought it was me making a mistake. Then a couple of months ago I bought n iPaq with 802.11b and recognized the WEP code I wrote in my access point. I also had success in a Linksys wireless bridge. No problem at all. Like a breeze! But I tried in many different ways to make the WUSB11 to recognize WEP from a Windows XP laptop and no way! I went to Linksys website and couldn't find anything that helps. This product will work fine for you if you don't need data security and WEP is not a concern.

Good, if you can install it.
by kuebby ,Sep 21 '03
Pros: Good reception.
Cons: Hard to install!
I bought this at my local Best Buy just looking for the least expensive wireless box to get internet back to my room. It took me about 2.5 hours to install this and has been causing me grief on and off since then. The software is ok and installing it is easy but getting xp to recognize it is the problem. So it had been working pretty good for the past 9 months until we had all these problems with the viruses. It wasn't the virus but microsoft that caused it to fail. I downloaded a bunch of updates from microsoft update and included was a driver for this. I installed the driver and bam I had lost the network. It took me 90 minutes to solve the problem when all I had to do was rollback the driver which the linksys software or manual didn't help with at all. I have it set up so it has to get reception through 2 walls and this has not yet been a problem so I can't complain about it.
