SHAG-ging for Safety by Brian_Igo | Sep 23 '00 There are two parts to riding a motorcycle. The first are the technical skills of knowing how to make the bike go, turn and stop. The other half is knowing how to apply that knowledge in specific situations to keep yourself alive. They work together but...Return to opinion

Learning to SHAG (Reply to this comment)

Thanks so much for the SHAG-ging lesson. I will now start learning to SHAG. I took the MSF course in May. My car died in July, so August 9 I replaced it with a Nighthawk 450. As of Sept 24, I've ridden 4,000 miles. Thought I was getting pretty good - HAH!
At the 4k mark, I failed to use SIPDE, selected the wrong turning speed, and went down in a turn that turned out to be tighter than 90 degrees, reverse banked, and steeply cambered - with a fine layer of gravel, sand, and dust.
I didn't think I had hit my head, but there are a couple of dings in my helmet (maybe rocks that flew up as I made a rooster-tail of gravel) - I'm getting a new one. After seeing the scuff marks on my chaps, I was really glad I opted for them, despite the heat of mid-day Kona.

Reading the Road and Cagers (Reply to this comment)

Damn good work there. We only fall because we allow ourselfs to fall. We only have an accident because we drive into one, not around it. Ride "SMART", if ya want to race or play games use the track not the road.

I am glad that you were able to customize and expand on your MSF learning experience, I remember being fairly confident that we were reaching folks concerning the big picture and its obvious that you got It.
