| brainsurgguy's Full Review: 1991 Saab 900 Convertible |
My endless search for unique, quality cars (see other auto reviews) brought my attention to the Saab series. It took a while, but the body type grew on me over the years long before I ever seriously contemplated buying one. When replacing my car, I decided to try my luck on a used Saab 900 convertible. I preferred the older body type (phased out after '94) which narrowed my year model choice to 1991-1994.
No matter for I came across a work colleague who was looking to sell his charcol gray, low mileage, pampered 900 convertible. I was sold on the car 5 minutes into the test drive.
Like other quality European autos, the Saab grabs the road and handles smoothly and responsively. It is heavier than comparable autos which adds to its road handling. The 4 cylinder , turbo boosted engine is peppy when the turbo is engaged, though not a rocket by any means. I have driven non turbo model 900's and they plod along with little pick up, I don't recommend the older Saab's without the turbo.
Anyone who has seen a Saab can attest for its uniqueness. It can be identified from the other end of a parking field. Some people never endear to it, many come to appreciate it, like an acquired adult taste to finer food. The convertible roof is easy to open and close, and is fully automatic. The fabric does tend to wear out within 7 years or so if parked outside.
The interior is roomy in front, adequate in back. The panel is functional; it does not dazzle you with many fancy knobs, buzzers, lights, etc.
The trunk space suffices. Most convertibles come with a good factory dual cd / cassett player.
My Saab averaged a bit over 20 mpg. In the 2 years I owned it, I had to replace the clutch, ignition switch, and air conditioning compressor. All hurt more in the pocket than I expected. The Saab mechanic also told me that most 900's will rust and leek around the manifold between 70- 100k.
That in mind, I still enjoyed the car very much. However, I took it into a guard rail on a rainy evening and can say first hand that the air bag deployed on time and probably saved my life. Saab's are known throughout the auto industry as having one of the highest safety ratings.
Unfortunately, my Saab bought the farm.
My experience, though, permits me to recommend it with enthusiasm for anyone looking for something a bit off the beatin' path, without sacrificing quality.
It suits individuals, small families, old and young. It combines sportiness with safety and reliability.
