HomeCars & MotorsportsCarsWhat Should I Know About Premium vs. Regular Gasoline?

No real difference, not worth the extra money

Jan 27 '00

Choices, choices, choices. This is what we face at the pump each time we fill up. Regular, Extra or Premium? Which is better? Is there a REAL difference?
Well, the octane ratings in each one are 87, 89 and 91 respectively and these represent the anti-knock levels in your cars engine. The higher the octane rating, the less knock and, therefore, doesn't hurt your engine as much and "supposedly" gets a few extra miles out of a tank. But is the price really worth it? Should we pay the extra few bucks to get the premium over the regular gas? No, not really. There is no need to do this, especially if your car is only a few years old. The gas doesn't protect your engine in any way, the car runs fine at the 87 octane level of gas and there has been no proven fact that premium is that much better than regular. Why? Because gas stations don't want you to know this. They want us to pay the extra money.
However, in older cars where the engine has gone through rigorous times, a higher quality gas may be suitable. The premium gas doesn't damage the engine as much , although there is LITTLE difference but this difference may go a long way in keeping the engine alive a little longer. But again, we get back to the fact that you would be paying much more for this gas, and, in the long-run , costing you a lot of extra money. But if you have the money, go for it. No real harm in doing so.
Overall, don't buy premium gas of you don't need to. It has no substantial benefits over regular gas. If you have an older vehicle, maybe you can start using the premium gas to save the engine but don't go digging a deep hole in your wallet to do so.
