Pros: great gas mileage, cute looking, roomy Cons: seem to vary greatly
Two weeks ago I bought a 'new' car. I was replacing an '89 Ford Taurus with either a Protege or a Ford Focus.
The trim levels for the Mazda Protege are:
DX - basic
LX - nice-y nice
ES - hello, fancy pants!

Pros: Solid, roomy, , stylish, great balance of power, handling, ride, and braking Cons: Stiff ride at low speeds, road/tire noise The Bottom Line: BMW dynamics, Japanese quality and reliability, and European styling. For just under $15,000, what more could I ask for?

Pros: More Leg room then I thought it would have Cons: should have leather interior
I recently bought this car and I am so happy with my choice. I never owned a Mazda before and for some reason never thought about test driving one even though it was in my price range. I had been driving a Nissan Sentra and my lease was up and one of...

Pros: price, quality, stereo Cons: none
We bought a 99 Protege last spring, replacing an 87 Civic. We shopped for a new Civic but they were too expensive. The price difference between the Protege and Civic was about $2000 for equivalent models.
We also test drove small cars from...

Pros: Great gas mileage, absolutely NO repairs done in 60,000 miles Cons: gutless to the extreme The Bottom Line: Go get it if you live in flatsville, but beware of climbing even the shortest of steep hills.
I never bought the '99 Protege. I sort of came into it through my girlfriend/now wife, who purchase ...

Best opinions are easier to identify by the age of the person who is writing. I'm a male, who's almost turning 21.
When I started driving at 17, I use to drive a 1994 Ford Escort Wagon. Yippee! Hey come on, share my entusiasm. Anyways, I'll...

Pros: Get Up And Go! Cons: air-con slows it down on the highway. The Bottom Line: Virtually maintenance free sporty economy car that keeps going, and going, and going!
I bought a '92 Protege used in '95. I traded it in a few years ago for ... yes... another Protege! The '92 had over 140,000 miles on it and it was still purring like a kitten so I knew that another Protege would last me.
I checked out a few...

Pros: Zippy city handling, best-in-class looks, reliability, overall value Cons: Mushy pedal feel, somewhat underpowered (hey, it's a base model) The Bottom Line: Considering that many of my friends who drive the Protege are female, it appears this car has serious chick appeal. And why not? It's handsome, practical, reliable and fun.
The way I see it, the best examples of a car company's engineering can be found in its baseline models, the bottom of the bottom. Unfettered by extra performance features and luxury gewgaws, a base econobox must provide a compromise, offering a minimum...

Pros: Roomy, Great Stopping Capability Cons: Can't think of one
My odyssey in car buying (this last time) started when my daughter wrecked her used car. She needed something dependable, affordable and safe. We looked at numerous used cars, but they always had high mileage, no warranty and were priced too high....

Pros: Refined feel. Doesn't look like a Civic. Easy to live with. Low loan rate OAC. Cons: A bit short on power. Some rattles. Low MPG. Expensive to repair bumper test damage. The Bottom Line: Very nice small car. Worth serious consideration if you're shopping in this class.
Update: I sold my Protege after a little more than 3 years of happy ownership. I was really tired of shifting and wanted an automatic transmission to make my life easier while stuck in traffic. I miss my Protege, but also remember some of the...

Pros: Handling, lots of room for people and stuff! Cons: The dark color, but only if you live where it's dusty.
I bought the Protege in February of '99. I'd driven my friend's '95 Protege and really enjoyed it. The handling was great; the car was comfortable to drive and there hadn't been a single problem with the car since she'd bought it. Before buying my...

Buying the 1999 Mazda Protege was inevitable as we are a family that are smart, savy, and cost minded consumers. We did our research and found the Protege to have a very high rating as an economy car and an excellent service record as well. The next...
