Get a Boat that Fits You.

The Bottom Line Keep in mind what you need, why you need it, where you will need it and what you are going to do with it and you will be fine.
You probably want a boat for one or more of these reasons:
Fishing
Skiing
Tubing
Pleasure Cruising
Transportation
Work
Recreation
So remember when you are choosing to buy one, take into consideration exactly why you want one. Don’t make the mistake of buying more than you need. Salesmen have a good way of making a boat sound like it is just what you need but you can look a little deeper than his sales commission.
Things to look for:
First of all you want a boat that is safe. If you are getting a simple aluminum fishing boat 10, 12, or 14, foot long, I recommend a deep-V. They are safe. I have fished for many years out of aluminum boats and now that I have fished from a deep-V, I will never go back. The deep-V is the reference to the structure of the boat. A deep-V is in that form, the sides come up higher offering more safety and stability.
Secondly, you don’t want a boat that doesn’t fit the motor you have or you can afford. Find a boat that will fit the motor you have. If you have a 100 horsepower motor, look for a fiberglass boat over 16 feet long but under 28. Don’t look for an aluminum boat unless it has been rated for that motor.
Safety:
On the topic of Boat Safety, every boat no matter what the make or model has a coast guard rating attached to it. Follow that rating. First of all it is illegal if you don’t, and secondly, it is not safe.
Keep this in mind:
You should always keep in mind how and where you will be using your boat. If you have a big lake or the ocean you will want a big boat with high sides. If you are fishing a small lake or pond you could use a smaller and more maneuverable boat.
Too many people lose track of why they are buying a boat and they don’t buy one that fits them. My proof of that is in the classified ads and second hand adds. Look at how many new or fairly new boats are for sale. Get a boat that fits and you wont have that problem.
Keep in mind what you need, why you need it, where you will need it and what you are going to do with it and you will be fine. Safety first.
