| charles_rosa's Full Review: Inferno of Dante |
This is an interesting translation with excellent notes on the text. In the hardcover edition, the illustrations are superior as well. Pinsky, an excellent poet in his own right, manages to catch some of the music of Dante's incomparable journey without compromising either the horrific imagery or its compelling message. Once through the poem is not enough. By the third reading you will begin to appreciate Dante's achievement. By the fourth reading, you will forget that you are reading an allegory and believe in the reality of Hell. Any doubts you may have about there being a moral order in the universe will fade. The brief encounter with the suicides will forever dissuade you from taking this route. By the fifth reading, you will want to take up the study of Italian and walk the streets of Dante's beloved Firenze. After the sixth reading, you will look up at the stars every chance you get. After the seventh reading, you will wonder why you ever bothered reading anything else.
