| skimmel's Full Review: The Bat! |
I use e-mail extensively (and probably excessively). I have tried all of the "big" programs (Outlook, Netscape, Eudora) and some smaller ones. Recently I stumbled upon The Bat, and it is clearly the best e-mail program that I have used to date.
Here's why I think this:
1) It doesn't use the Outlook address book so is apparently safe from viruses that exploit this in Outlook. Despite patches to Outlook, our computer group at work has all but banned Outlook because of security concerns. Until then, Outlook was my favorite.
2) It is small (in terms of memory usage). For example, Eudora takes up 15 MB RAM while The Bat uses 5 MB. This makes a big difference in the overall performance of my computer.
3) Even if the first 2 were not a factor, The Bat is incredibly user-friendly and customizable (much more so than Netscape, for example). It seems like an e-mail program written by people who really do and understand e-mail. Some examples: (1) when replying to an e-mail, the initial e-mail is displayed in a scrollable window above the reply window. You can therefore read the initial e-mail while your responding, without having to scroll up and down in the reply window. (2) there are hotkeys that you can set up. FOr example, I have a hotkey for checking e-mail (ctrl-shirt-M). While I'm working in Word, for example, I can hit ctrl-shift-M, without leaving Word, and my e-mail will be downloaded. Very useful when you're waiting for mail but don't want to stop what you're doing! There are many, many more nice features that really improve my efficiency, but are too numerous to mention here.
Bottom line: try it. There's a free 30-day trial at their web site.
