| producer's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 5000 R500LO |
I bought my Dell Inspiron 5000 notebook two months ago, and already you can get a bigger screen, more memory and who knows what else for the same amount I paid ($2300) - but that's the way the computer cookie crumbles.
That being said - this is a great little machine (about 6.75 lbs). I like the fact that Dell (www.dell.com) allows you to customize what you want from the notebook. I upgraded the hard drive to 12GB, but skipped upgrading the memory from dell (which was rather pricey), in favor of getting extra memory (another 128MB) from www.crucial.com and installing it myself (very simple to do with the inspiron).
With the added memory (to make 160MB total), this machine cruises. It is far faster than my office machine, and with a 56K built in modem I don't have to worry about not being able to connect to the internet when I need to. I didn't get a DVD drive because I just don't have need for one yet - but I did upgrade the video card, in case I ever want to get the DVD. It can be hard to upgrade your video card if you do want to switch from a CD to DVD drive.
The screen on the Inspiron is great - I only have the 14.1 inch, and I think the default now is a 15 inch - which I'm sure is even more fabulous. I haven't had a single problem with the machine - except that I had to re-install Word when I first got the machine (but that may have been something I accidentally tweaked) not Dell's fault. So I haven't used Dell's customer service, but I hear pretty good things.
I also like the track pad on this machine - although I believe some of the newer models are offering a track pad and mouse "nub." It's just personal preference here - but I find the track pad easier for sustained use (such as surfing) than the nub, which tends to result in a somewhat tender fingertip after long hours of use.
The battery lasts about two hours before warning you that it needs recharging - and it recharges relatively quickly - in four hours or so. It's also very sleek looking, which is nice when I'm doing a presentation, and need to impress someone.
I bought a notebook over a desktop because of space issues, and because I needed it to be mobile. It was a big investment for me, but I am very happy with the product.
