| tke1081's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 R500VT |
The Dell Inspirion is an excellent laptop. I have been using an Inspiron for over a year now. I used a 7000 model from April 99 to October 99. The 7000 model is almost the same as the 7500. I have been using the 7500 since November of 99.
The screen size and quality are excellent. I believe you can get upto a 15.3 inch monitor. I have the 15 inch model and it is fantastic. I even prefer it to my regular monitor sometimes. One negative to the screen is the resolution. If you don't have it on 1400 X 1050 it won't fill the whole physical screen. I am using Windows NT 4.0 just for your info.
The 25 GB harddrive is has fast read/write access. It is really nice to have all that space available. I use my labtop for GIS applications and data.
The battery is excellent. It last between 2.5 and 3.5 hours roughly. If there is a power failure it automatically switches to battery power without any interuption. It is a Lithium Ion battery, better than the old Nickel Cadnium batteries. The battery slot can also be substituted with an available ZIP drive! This is the only labtop that I know of that supports a zip drive internally! A real great feature.
I have a docking station for my laptop. It works wonderfully and allows you to use your laptop at your desk the same way you would use a desktop machine. There is of course a docking station port on the back of all Inspiron machines.
The combo CD ROM/3.5 Disk Drive Unit is a very nice space saving feature. The Inspiron also comes with DVD. My old 7000 had a DVD and it worked well.
There are 2 PCMCIA Card slots. I use a 3Com combo network/modem card in mine. It works just fine.
The Inspiron also comes with USB, InfraRed and SVideo ports which is great for plug in devices and multimedia. It has 2 serial ports (one male, one female) and one printer port.
I am not crazy about the touch pad but it works fine. The keyboard is ok, nothing special. One note is that the keyboard is not sealed so don't spill anything on it!!!
The power, Hard drive and battery charge lights are on the front. I don't like their placement. They should be on top.
The only other bad thing is that the Inspiron is very heavy compared to most laptops and hence it is bulky.
Overall it is an outstanding machine. I highly recommend it.
