After researching several brands, I selected a Gateway for my replacement computer. I did this for several reasons: 1) You seemed to get more for your money ; 2) The components were higher quality 3) several technical sites on the net lauded Gateway; 4) I could purchase the computer with MY options.
I have been very pleased with the computer. It is everything I have wanted and more. The more is SUPPORT. I have owned computers since TI came out with one in the 70's. I've been through several major brands and have even been so frustrated as to build my own. My major complaint has always been that once the check clears the bank, get ready for a hassle. I was ecstatic to learn that Gateway does not subscribe to this method of doing business.
If you need drivers, they have their own site tailored to the hardware they install in their machines. Technical manuals? Yes, another web site for those hard to find specs. No more searching the web to find specs and data on a piece of hardware.
Customer support? There are two kinds. Email and voice. There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe them. They are very concerned that you be happy with their product and will go to any length to make things right. You are never referred to Microsoft or any other company to fix the problem.
Perhaps the most amazing thing that I ran into at Gateway tech support was a gentleman who actually said the words, "I don't know, but if you can hold, I'll find someone to help you who has the answer." Techs NEVER say that! It was a refreshing change.
The one problem I had was with my monitor. We were unsure whether it was the monitor itself or the video card that was causing the putrid pink tinge. Gateway sent both to me via UPS. It turned out that it was the monitor but, since I had already installed the new video card, they told me to keep it. I shipped the defective monitor and original card back, also VIA UPS. How much did I pay for the service and shipping? ZERO. That's my favorite number where costs are concerned.
My recommendation (and I'm not a Gateway employee): If you want a quality product with superb support, you cannot go wrong buing your next computer from Gateway.
