My Emachine

Sep 17 '00

Last thanksgiving my wife and I decided to go out and buy a computer. Being around thanksgiving time there were all sorts of good sales going on and they had just opened a Circuit City in town and we thought we'd start by looking there first. When we got there and looked around we couldn't believe the deals we saw with the emachines computers. After comparing prices, processor speeds, memory, etc., we chose the Emachine with a 433Mhz processor, 32MB ram, 4.2 GB hard drive, 40X cd-rom, 56k modem and purchased a speaker system, 17" monitor and additional software.

That was almost a year ago and since then we have upgraded the memory to 64MB, purchased a cd-writer and upgraded the hard drive to a 13GB. I now feel a slight need to upgrade the mother board and cpu to keep up with the growing technology. The processor's seem to get faster and faster at a rate that you'll always be upgrading to keep your computer from becoming old technology.

If your anything like I am about having to keep your computer current
you can purchase a computer from Gateway with an additional option I think that is a one time fee to take your computer in and they will upgrade it every year with no additional charges. I'm a real do it yourselfer and would much rather learn and do it myself than send my computer in some place for a period of time and have someone else work on it.

During the thanksgiving sale they were offering a rebate for everything we bought. One rebate they offer is an instant $400 rebate for signing up with MSN Compuserves online service for three years. We've been to hooked on AOL to do that though so that was the only rebate we did not get. If we would have went with MSN's rebate with all the other rebates we would have actually made a penny on the computer itself.

Emachines also has a web site that can be helpful to anybody with and detailed and technical questions. They show the insides and outsides with descriptive and detailed specs. If I ever want to know what something is on the motherboard or what can I upgrade my cpu to without changing the motherboard I look to their site, I can find all my answers there.

Overall we are very happy with our Emachine. We paid just about the lowest price considering all the rebates and will probably always have to add something or change something to keep it up to date. The technology of computers seems to grow at a rate fast enough to almost keep you constantly busy, I sometimes feel like I'm struggling to keep between obsolete and modern technology but that's how I would feel with any other computer I would own.

If you are looking for a computer that offers you a great deal for the dollar take a look at some of Emachine's deal's, it is the most affordable I've ever seen without being mail order. Pay most attention to hard drive size, ram and processor speed.

Our original hard drive was only 4.2GB and the operating system took 2GB leaving us with 2.2GB of storage. We began to run out of disk space shortly after purchasing the system. With our 13GB hard drive there is plenty of disk space for storage and I don't think we'll ever run into that problem again.

The memory we upgraded to 64MB from 32MB was not really all that necessary but the price for it wasn't bad and I do what ever I can to keep our Emachine up to date.
