I am on AOL, so I have access to the internal buddy list feature that comes with the program. however, I was not happy with the feature until the latest version 6.0 came out. I talked to a few friends, and they told me that I should download AOL Instant Messenger 4.0. I asked them why since I already access to my buddy list through AOL. They began to tell me some of the features, and I was totally shocked. The people at AOL had put all of the features I wanted as part of AOL buddy list into their external AIM program.
I went and downloaded the 2.2 MB install program. The install was easy and I was setup in minutes. Some of the features in AIM 4.0 include away system, stock ticker, you can see how long your buddy has been online and how long they have been idling for. Two other features new to AIM 4.0 are ones that you won't find even through AOL 6.0. You can now talk to your buddies. I don't mean chat, but if you both have sound and microphones you can talk like you were on the phone, and best of all it is free. I talked to a few of my buddies this way, and I loved it. It worked perfectly with my headset microphone.
Some other features that AIM has is a news ticker, email checker, and AOL Phone which allows to call a regular phone from the internet for the fraction of a regular long distance call.
AIM is highly customizable. You can control the sounds and even group your buddies into groups by your preferences such as family, friends, co-workers, or even names of your own choosing. Messages are also customizable with :)'s that turn into actual smiley's and font, color, and background that you can change to your liking. I no longer use AIM since AOL added the buddy away system in 6.0, but I would recommend AIM for anyone that uses the AOL system to talk to friends. For those of you that are on AOL, you can get in the fun too since their is a way to shut off the internal program. It is available in AIM's help on their website. So come on join in on the fun.
