This site is certainly worth the visit. The site is free and offers up to the minute online scanning of all known viruses.
I was recently hit by the WIN95.MTX virus. This is a very nasty virus with a medium risk factor. I had Mcaffee anti-virus software on my computer but had neglected to update it. Well I certainly learned my lesson. I received an email from someone I was familiar with that had an attachment. The attachment was labeled apology. This is the dreaded virus. It infects windows .dll files and .exe. The first symptom there was a problem was with Quicken 2001. The virus will not let quicken open up. This was a very big problem.
I thought there might have been a problem with Quicken but once I went to the tech support page they diagnosed it to a virus. I then attempted to contact Mcaffee online. This is where the virus really gets nasty. The virus will not allow you to access any anti-virus web pages. I was ready to format and start from scratch.
I went to CompuServe search and typed in anti-virus. The search engine directed me to Microtrend House call. Evidently the web site does not get recognized as an anti-virus page because I was able to get to it with the virus. Once on the site I was able to perform a virus scan right from the web page. The scan revealed the problem. I had the win95.mtx virus. Not only did the site detect it the site cleaned what files they could and gave very specific instructions for manually cleaning the files it was unable to access, I.E. explorer and winsock32.
This site really saved the day for me. Once they cleaned my drive I was able to go into Mcaffee and get the updates I needed. Once I had the updates I detected more files containing the virus. Evidently from not being able to eliminate the Winsock virus it just keeps spreading. Long story short I am back up in under a day and without restoring or any data loss. I did have to dump a few files and copy from my wife’s laptop but this was easily done. The Microtrend page gave step-by-step instructions for doing this.
This site has my highest recommendation and thanks.
