With Microsoft FrontPage 2000
Even HTML Dummies Get On Web
For years I had wanted my own web page on the Internet. But I had no idea how to create one. I don't know HTML. I don’t speak Internet language. But after opening Microsoft’s FrontPage 2000 (FP 2000), I had my own web in about an hour. And man, it looked good!
I must admit, the program baffled me for a few minutes, because I had recently begun tinkering with its cousin, FrontPage ’98. Going from the ‘98 screen to the 2000 screen was a minute challenge. But once I conquered that mental stumbling block, my web page started to take shape fast.
It helps to have an idea of what kind of pages you want your web to consist of before you start. You can then take best advantage of the wonderful range of ready-made templates and looks FP 2000 offers you. I found that old napkins were best for sketching out my plan.
You can use FP2000 by working strictly in an HTML view mode, if you like. But knowing nothing about the language, I stay away from there for the most part. For the HTML illiterate masses, like myself, the program looks and works like most word processors out there.
You can begin with a brand new “web” (FP 2000’s term for a web page) or download an existing one, and edit it on FP 2000. This is one of the most endearing qualities of FP 2000, the ability to maintain your web on your home computer, and simply upload your changes when you’re done.
You can design your own layout for each page of your web utilizing FP2000’s ingenious table method, or you can choose from a library of pre-designed pages to accomplish the look you desire.
Inserting images, creating thumbnails, and setting up navigation links to content on your web, or on the Internet is a snap with FP 2000 tools. Other neat tools allow you to add “search” and “discussion Group” pages, as well as dynamic HTML effects like double clicks and mouse overs for various elements on your web pages.
You can add sound and video to your pages, and utilize FP2000 built in Picture Toolbar to edit images you bring into your web. This editor is not near as powerful as your own Adobe PhotoShop might be, but for simple cropping and resizing, it works great.
FP2000 offers all the whistles you need, from hit counters to tables of content. Just keep in mind, the more bells and whistles you add to your web, the slower your web will be in loading, and this might prove frustrating to your web viewers.
The most fun you’ll have is choosing from the 55 different creative themes you can assign to your web. Theses themes are colorful and creative, and there’s one to suit whatever style web you’re in the mood for. Once you decide, you can carry this theme of background, button, banner, text and hyperlink designs to all the pages of your web.
The view bar on the main screen of FP2000 offers powerful tools that allow you to view the pages of your web; manage the folders and hyperlinks on your web; and check reports and task lists that help you ensure that all elements of your web are working the way you intended.
One more HTML note: I added a few neat elements to my web, like a local weather box, that I found for free on the Internet. In most cases, the source site will provide you the HTML code you need to add the feature work to your web. It was easy to copy the code, then paste onto my web in the HTML view. I was very proud of myself! Try it! You’ll like it!
When all is said and done, you think, you can view your web through a web browser, and see where any slight adjustments are needed. I found a few places where I needed to add/delete some text spacing to make things look their best. But that was it.
I found it a breeze to update my web on a weekly basis. I just delete the old stuff, and add the new articles, pictures, quotes and hyperlinks on my computer. It takes less than 5 minutes for FP2000 to upload the changes directly to my web page on the Internet. It’s that easy.
