The Inspiron 5000 is an excellent laptop. I have the 15" XGA screen with the Celeron 450 and with 32MB (I upgraded it to 160MB through www.crucial.com), the total came just under $2000 and for the price, nothing comes close to this for value.
The full-size keyboard is excellent with good spacing and a nice, solid feel. Much better than the mushy Compaq or the unusually shallow key travel of the Sonys. The trackpad is accurate and responsive. It has all the usuals: USB, 2 Type 2/1 Type 3 PCMCIA slots, internal modem, TV out, etc. And this is much lighter than the Inspiron 7000/7500. The larger screen is a must buy -- either the XGA or the SVGA+ -- text is very sharp, brightness is uniform, and colors are rich. However, at resolutions other than the native (e.g. 640x480, 800x600), the display is blocky and blurred (Gateway does this better than the Dell laptops).
Stability is excellent. All of my burn-in tests passed without a crash. The fan does kick in during heavy usage, but turns off by itself as the system cools down.
The best part is the new Celeron processor. This new mobile Celeron revision is an actual PIII core at 0.18 micron WITH SSE instructions! The only substantial difference is the smaller 128K L2 cache (the PIII has 256K). It runs at 100Mhz bus speed. Benchmarks results are superb for a Celeron and CPUID shows a PIII core. This mobile processor is a wonderful value and an understated best buy.
The I5000 also comes with Dell's excellent 3-year warranty, 24-hour support and a 30-day return policy.
Many think that Dell is expensive, but when comparing similar laptops, I found this I5000 to have substantial overall VALUE. Highly recommended...
