| jeffrottman's Full Review: Earthlink Cidco MailStation |
This machine is a beauty! It's called the "Mailstation" by Cidco. It's overall design is very pleasing and it has a nice big fold-up screen, although it has no backlighting. It will work with either batteries or AC power. It still needs to connect to a phone line wherever it is, although this machine is slimmer and easy to carry around. It is just the right size and light in weight to slip into a large purse or small attache case.
The Cidco people put a lot of thought into the design and it shows, as it has an easy to read graphical LCD screen with two different text display sizes, a spell checker, calculator, an address book, and an appointment calender. The Mailstation also has a standard parallel printer port on the back which is handy to print out E-mails for storage. The Mailstation also allows you to have up to 5 separate E-mail accounts on the same machine. The only drawback to the Mailstation is that the keyboard is cramped and may be difficult to use for persons with larger fingers.
When they sell you a Mailstation, the Cidco people will configure the machine for you so when it arrives all you have to do is plug it in and start to send and receive E-mail. The Mailstation is also very inexpensive. It sells for $99 for a one year plan for service for $9.95 a month.
The Mailstation will work well for anyone to keep in touch with relatives or co-workers and friends without having to deal with a complete computer system. One thing to remember though, is that it won't allow attachments to E-mail, where a lot of people send photos or other documents. That function still needs a real computer to see the attachments.
Great little machine with a great screen!
