Finally! A laptop, portable, or whatever you want to call it that can take on a desktop machine with regards to power. In all my experience with computers, I have always lived with the concept that laptops are always overshadowed by the power of desktops...until now.
That concept changed with the arrival of the new Inspiron 7000s that I purchased for my office. We needed portables that were capable of doing web development and graphic design while handling some pretty advanced databases applications. I was not let down.
Let's see...where do I start? How about the 17" (15.1" viewable) display. I was so tired of staring at puny laptop monitors that made me feel like I needed a new set of glasses each time I used them. So when I heard that Dell was putting this monster on their Inspirons, I was quick to check them out. I have been extremely pleased with the quality of each display, although each of my machines has at least one pixel that doesn't function. Dell informs me, however, that this is well within their accepted standards for this type of display.
Next how about the PII 450 and 128mb of memory? Add on an 10gb hard drive and a DVD/CDRom drive and you've got the makings of a portable powerhouse! My machines also came with a 3Com 10/100 & 56.6 modem PCMCIA card that allows me to connect to our network by simply plugging in a pigtail patch cable.
Finally, add on Dell's docking station and I can go from desktop to portable in the blink of an eye. I do have to admit, however, that the weight on the machine is a little much (around 8lbs). Carrying around the laptop, case, and accessories can get a little on the hefty side, but for the power...it's worth it.
The proverbial "cherry on top" comes from Dell's customer service. While I haven't had to call for support on these machines, I have worked with Dell support on our servers and Optiplex desktops and it is comforting to know that if a problem ever arises with the Inspirons, Dell will be there and ready to help.
If you are looking for a portable that will keep up with your desktop, take a look at Dell's Inspiron series. Each machine can be custom built to your specifications providing all the power and portability you desire.
