| davtmar's Full Review: Philips PC Internal CDRW 400 Series |
I recently bought a Philips external CDRW 400 series cdrw drive (4X 4X 16X) with a PCMCIA connection, and it’s been a wonderful help to me. I have many cds of my own performances, and I was tired of paying someone to make copies of them, so I decided to get one of my own. I chose one that both writes and rewrites at 4X, since I don’t have the time to wait for my cds all day. Since I have a laptop with no SCSI port, and because a PCMCIA connection is a faster connection than either USB or parallel port, I looked at the few drives with this connection.
I bought the Philips drive because it had everything that I was looking for at a significantly lower price than other external PCMCIA drives, like those made by HP, Richo, and Smart and Friendly. It lives up to its billing as a 4X writer and rewriter, as it copies a sixty minute cd of mine in fifteen.
It installed easily on my computer (Dell Inspiron 3200, Win 98, 32 MB RAM, P2 233 mhz), which, by the way, barely meets the minimum system requirements for this drive, and I was making copies of my cds five minutes after installation.
The software that it comes with, “Write2cd,” is not the standard Adaptec software that many other cdrw drives use, but it works just as easily. Out of curiosity, I connected my Philips drive to a computer that had the Adaptec software installed, and had no problems.
If you have a laptop and are interested in a cdrw drive, take a close look at the Philips CDRW400 PCMCIA- it's cheaper than its competition and does a great job!
