Dell Dimension 4100 Series
By Stephen Smith
I bought the Dell Dimension 4100 with some grant money I got and I really enjoy it. It is almost twice as fast as the Dell Dimension T600 I have. In addition to that it has a whopping 256-MB of RAM. All that wouldn’t be complete without a monster 35 GB hard drive. Fused together with the latest operating system made by Microsoft this computer is top rate.
Before Intel released the Pentium 4 processor they upgraded the Pentium III to its maximum potential. At its fastest speed it reaches 1 GH-z which is equivalent to 1,000 MH-z. This is as fast as anyone would need. No more waiting for that stupid Windows to start up, no more waiting for those programs, its practically done before you even think about doing it, its so fast!
Not that the speed of the processor doesn’t matter, but it isn’t as important as the RAM (random access memory) which is like the computers short-term memory. It uses that to store information that isn’t going to matter in ten minutes. With not much RAM, applications will not run very fast. It will take forever for anything to load. But, with 256 MB’s of RAM there will be absolutely NO lag time in loading those resource-sucking applications.
So, let’s say that you get everything set up and your psyched, your making movies, typing e-mails, installing Napster and all that other stuff, and then you realize, there’s no more space! That’s what will happen if you run out of hard drive space. Well, with 35 GB’s of space there will be room for absolutely every little useless application and file you want to cram on your beige box we call a computer.
All of this is no good if you don’t have an operating system. This new Dell computer has the latest in Microsoft’s Windows software; Windows Millenium Edition. This is Microsoft’s latest and newest operating system and is great. One of the flaws of this operating system is the networking software. I’m sure it works well with others Windows ME computers, but not with Windows 98 SE. I tried to network the two computers and they were physically networked because they were sharing the cable modem but they don’t seem to recognize each other. I don’t know what’s up, but I’ll figure it out.
Well, when all is said and none I think this computer comes out on top as the best computer I’ve ever used, and I’ve used the new Apple G4 Multimedia edition! I would recommend this computer to anybody who’s got the money to spend on it.
