Guaranteed to spark interest, the Vadem Clio is a unique tablet-style Windows CE device. It offers the user the convenience of both keyboard and tablet input, all on a generous color display.
The latest model, the Clio 1050, overcomes some of the shortcomings of the original model. It boasts a faster processor and greater memory.
Because it is a Windows CE Pro device, the Clip sports the complete Pocket Office Suite, including Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, and so on. As "pocket" versions, these apps are little lightweight for some road warriors, but perfectly capable for e-mail, light spreadsheets, and memo/report writing. If you want a full-blown multimedia experience, this is not the portable device for you. But if you want something that has long battery life, is solidly constructed, and can do 90 percent of what you really use a portable device for anyway, a Clio is the way to go.
Pluses
-- Calligrapher 5.3 handwriting recognition very easy to use.
-- Vadem Viewfinder utility, included only with Clios, should be standard on all Windows CE devices.
-- Built in modem is great.
Minuses
-- Battery life not near the 9 hours advertised. Still get an acceptable 6 hours or so.
-- There are some memory limitations: You can't set the system memory for less than 8 megs.
-- Web browser is a little wimpy.
