Microsoft Notepad is Windows 3.1/95/NT's built in text editor. It is designed for one thing: editing plain text. It does this very well, but has it's limitations.
Notepad is your 'pen and paper' of your Windows desktop. You can jot little things down, such as names and phone numbers while on the phone, or write your usernames and passwords to various sites, or just about anything you can do with a pen and paper (except draw, of course).
Notepad has a few built in functions that come in handy: you have basic cut and paste abilities, you can change the font, find text, and print. It's missing any more advanced features, such as search and replace, save fonts, etc., but you're working with plain text, and plain text doesn't support properties like that. You can also set word wrap, but I don't like this feature, because if you edit the text in a DOS prompt, it's not lined up to the standard 78 columns of characters.
This program is designed with size in mind, so it's a very small program. It is very quick, however... I don't think you can open anything faster in Windows than notepad. With this feature, however, it also doubles as a hindrance: you can't load text files larger than 65k, but files rarely get that big anyway.
It's got a built in help system if you need any help, but I doubt anybody would need help with such a simple program anyway. The help file is tiny, as well.
If you like speed in reading text files, then notepad is for you. It loads up in a flash, and uses very little memory, so you could even have multiple instances of the program running at once with very little memory use. The interface is quick and to the point, and it does what it is needed to do very well, so I give it two thumbs up.
