| tyjmsmith's Full Review: Microsoft NetMeeting |
I decided to re-write my old NetMeeting review after getting two SRs in one day (they were anonymous and so appreciate that fact, but that’s another review). Yes, it might have deserved the SRs because it was written like 7 months ago, but I’m not re-writing it because of those SRs. I’m re-writing it because I hadn’t read the review in ages! Anyways, I noticed that my feelings for this product have drastically changed. And my sister’s comment reminded me of that! :o)
First off, it’s free! You can’t beat that! After you download this program from the Microsoft site you open it up and add other people to your speed dial by giving their e-mail addresses. The program then lets you know if that person is connected or not. Even though my sister and were both on line and both connected to the exact same server, it told us each time that one or the other were not connected! We tried this for over three hours one afternoon. We tried everyone of the servers, but not a one was successful. We had both just gotten video cameras for our computers and desperately wanted to see each other in real time.
My sister and I were both able to chat on this program once! That’s it! We tried numerous times, but were unsuccessful each try. We did go to the Microsoft web site trying to get help. But since Microsoft has about a million and one products out there, the website basically sent us on a wild goose chase.
So that is why I am not happy with this product. Other than that, if you can get connected and find someone you want to talk to who can also get connected, then this program is wonderful! You can draw pictures with your mouse like you do in that paintshop program. You can send files to whoever is in the meeting with you almost instantaneously. And the clarity is amazing! It is just like talking on the telephone. You do need to have a headset so you don’t get that echo thing, though.
We were never able to try out the video conferencing with this program because we were never able to get connected. So I cannot tell you how good (or bad) this feature is.
Since this product is free, I really cannot complain, but I am because of the frustration we suffered! I would recommend you trying this product out because it is quite amazing when it works. But if you find you cannot get connected, I recommend you go try HearMe.com. It’s like talking on a one-way radio there, the video feature is only a still picture taken every thirty seconds, and only one person can use the video feature at a time, but it’s better than nothing.
Editor’s Note: I am typing this in Microsoft Word and I found it kind of funny that the spell checker said NetMeeting was misspelled!
Editor’s Note #2: I just changed Netmeeting to NetMeeting and spell checker approved it…OOOPS!
