| corymn's Full Review: Micron Millenia MAX Series |
I have been reviewing computers and planning my purchase of a new computer for the last 6 months. I have worked with computers since the 70's and have been building and taking apart computer hardware for as long as I can remember. As a programmer and IT consultant, I need a fast, reliable machine and I need to know everything about that machine as well.
In my search, I considered every option. Purchasing various parts and building my own computer as I've done in the past; Going to a local shop and paying a little more for their expertise and time; or purchasing a major brand computer. I tried every manufacturer website - DELL, Gateway, Compaq, HP, and many smaller outfits. I used their system builders and quote systems to determine the best configuration. I called friends who offered me wholesale prices.
What struck me about Micron was not only the ease of use of their website, but the fact that they manufacture hardware that is faster than their competitors or anyone else. That is, they have a faster front side bus on the motherboard, and higher speed RAM. They have always been well known for making reliable motherboards, as well.
When the Pentium 4 came out, I checked out all the hardware reviews and benchmark tests, only to find that the Athlon 1200 is still faster and likely will be for a while. This means that the Millenia Max XP is one of the fastest personal computers available at this time.
So, the options, price and ease of configuration decided me and I ordered from them. The ordering process was extremely easy. The sales person was knowledgeable and was easily able to answer my questions and put to rest any of my concerns. I was given an order tracking number and was able to watch the status of my order - including UPS tracking - until the day it arrived at my door. The total time it took from ordering the custom built computer to receiving it was 2.5 weeks - and that included the Christmas/New Year holiday.
Setting up the computer was a breeze. All the ports are clearly marked and solidly placed. The case itself is an attractive design. The computer started up perfectly. There was a problem with the sound and after attempting to solve it through their extensive and simple to use web based help site, I called their Technical support. It was late friday night and I was talking to a technical support person within 15 minutes of the start of my call. The problem was related to shipping and I simply had to lift the cover and pushed the soundcard back into the slot. This was made simple by the fact that one must only pull two latches to lift off the cover.
The computer came exactly as ordered. I thought about doing some upgrades soon and was pleasantly surprised that the paper documentation has extensive coverage of the mainboard, processor and configuration so that I don't have to go searching for that information. That same documentation even includes pictures, which is unusual for mainboard documentation (which is often in crudely translated English.)
All in all, it was a great buying experience. I am a very picky computer buyer. The only reason I don't build my own computer is because the manufacturer or computer store should know more about compatibility issues than I do and will make informed decisions. However many companies simply buy the cheapest parts and slap them together and assume the customer isn't going to know the difference or only cares about the price. Micron is completely the opposite. I think they will appeal to the novice user as well as the experienced IT professional. I've been satisfied with a few other computer makers, but never so contented as this.
