Run While You Can

Feb 14 '00

First off, I must say that buying a gateway computer has been the WORST idea I've ever done. Sure, it sounds great in the ads: fast computer, reasonable pricing, friendly support, etc. Sure, the support is friendly, but when they DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING, it makes it a little harder to get things to work. Lemme try to rearrange everything in chronological order: First off, I get the computer out of the box. Everything works fine for the first month or so. Sure, modem isn't the best, but hey, I'm surviving. Then I get a bill for the internet usage. Wait a minute! My contract I signed up with said I got a year of Gateway's internet for free! Customer service argued that the SOFTWARE for one year of internet service was free. Har har har. Well, we argue this out, I get a rebate, and move on to a new ISP. Then, while trying to run programs, my computer suffers multiple crashes. Can we figure out what it is? No clue. A week after, all the info on my computer would dissappear. Virus? Nope. I'd be working along, and then nothing would work. I'd press the start button, and all that would appear would be "empty." Wonderful. I call tech support, they have me format and reload. Wonderful. Then the software I received with my CD writer doesn't work. I call tech support. I'm forwarded to some joke of a technician who gets me to waste 10 CD-R's (approx $2 a piece), and then disconnects me when he can't figure out the problem. ENRAGED, I call back, speak to the manager, get a recommendation to a local gateway store (thank God it had just come up a week ago.) Turns out the software is bugged, and you have to save every WAV file you want to write with. Ah well, $20 down the drain, chalk it up to experience. Then, my CD player doesn't play Audio CD's? What's the problem? Tech support says it's the cable connecting the CD drive to the soundcard. I don't have a clue how to install it, I call back, requesting my ON-SITE tech support. First guy tells me I don't have the warrenty. Next guy tells me on site won't run diagnostics (which means they'll install the chord, but not make sure it works). NEXT guy tells me on site does everything but diagnostics AND chords. Great. I fight for the next hour, and get someone out to my house. What does it turn out? One of my settings got put to mute when I installed a game. Wonderful. Overall, for the price I payed for this, I am disgusted with the service. Mind the unattractiveness of it and the corporate name on almost EVERYTHING, and I would recommend this to NO ONE.
