When I first saw this game advertised, I was very excited. Both of my parents grew up on the railroad, and my father deals with railroad business at his work, so I have had lots of exposure.
When I finally did play it, my expectations were definitely met. Right away you realize how realistic this game is. All of the maps they use are real, based on satellite photography from the U.S. Geological Survey and other sources. The maps include Eastern, Western and Southern and the entire United States, the Heartland, South America, China, Korea, Central Europe, Britain, the Mediterranean and the Edelweis Express (Australia.)
The premise of the game is you become an executive of a railroad company and you must run the company, trying to gain as much profit and power as possible. Plain and simple, right? Well...I wouldn't say that. The game is rather difficult to master, with so many aspects too handle at one time. You must monitor the amount of money a specific train is bringing in, and adjust its cargo accordingly. Then you must keep your eyes open for new opportunities to make a profit. Finally, you must also learn to master your stocks and bonds...something I am still trying to figure out.
Don't let these problems discourage you. Railroad Tycoon II is still an excellent game.
