Half a year ago, I had a Voodoo 2. One day, I discovered a new card with a new chipset in a computer magazine. It was the Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64. The price for this card was very good and I did a big error.
I bought it.
Instead of waiting more time and buying a better card a bit more expensive I bought the TNT2 M64. First, of course, I found it faster than the Voodoo 2 when playing games like ReVolt, Carmageddon II, etc. But two months after this "happy" period I found it so slow with new games.
I was unable to play at 800x600x32 with a decent framerate. Then, I downloaded a nice overclocking tool which allowed me to set the chip at 145 MHz, and the slow 64 bit memory at 130 MHz. It was not very useful.
I will now explain why the TNT2 M64 is so slow:
1.64 Bit memory instead of 128 bit (like normal TNT2 or any other modern card.) makes the card cheaper (32 Mb at 64 bit are cheaper than 16 Mb at 128 bit) but reduces a bandwidth of 2,4 Gb to 1,2 Gb. That means: Poor framerates at high resolutions or 32 bit color.
2.Nothing to do with 32 Mb, because the card will never be able to run at very high resolutions such as to take advantage of the 32 Mb.
3.There are a lot of TNT2 cards being sold by nearly unknown brands , which means only one thing: Poor materials.
I would certainly not have bought it if I had known that this would happen to me.
Of course, if you only want it for 2D graphics it is an excellent card.
