A friend referred me to this site after there were lots of little obnoxious viruses going around. I've got Norton and I get it updated often but I thought I'd check this site out.
I went and followed the instructions and the program began to check my hard drive. Sure enough it came up with two little viruses, Geschenk and another variation. HouseCall wiped them clean and pronounced my drive fit. Although I continue to use my Norton, I go back to this site at least monthly and have it scan my drive. It does this for FREE.
In addition to the free virus scan, there is a center for viruses that are prevalent in the wild, and viruses that most consumers are concerned about. There is a section for hoaxes too. Have you ever gotten an email that warns you not to open a file that says "It Takes Guts to say Jesus." or one like that? This is a well-known hoax that is documented at this site. I've gotten so many email "warnings" from well-intentioned friends. What I do now, rather than pass the warning along, is to look up the "warning" at TrendMicro and find out if it is real or a hoax. Then I'll send a copy of the virus warning or hoax notice to my friend. I think that spreading the hoax warnings around to everyone we know is like enacting a virus upon them.
It takes a good while to load, and the drive scan takes a while too. I'd suggest putting it on to run while you have things to do away from the computer for a time.
TrendMicro provides excellent information as well as a tremendous service.
