I was in the market to upgrade my old printer (HP 880cse) for a newer model. The primary reason for the upgrade was for my wife, she loves to take pictures and I had just bought her a Nikon 990 digital camera.
I researched all the new printers and found the 1218 to be the best at it's price range for several reasons, it's speed(17 black and white pages per minute, 13 color pages per minute), it's print resolution(2400x1200), and it's build quality. I have owned several HP printers and have never had any problems with them, ever!
When our 1218 finally appeared on our doorstep I went straight to installing it. Installation was very easy, the 1218 under the Windows OS can be connected via Parallel port or USB connection. I used USB.
Total installation took me less than 15 minutes.
After installing everything I quickly loaded up a picture off my hard drive and printed it with the software that came with the 1218. The print was incredible, even my wife could not believe it. Very impressive. Regular print quality was also improved over my older printer. There is a tray for single picture prints but I have yet to use it. There is also a lcd screen, it's something like a message center, very nice. There are several functions that can be done from the lcd screen that you do not have to use your computer to get to, for example making multiple copies.
Again, I have not used the lcd enough to give great details,but I can give you my first impressions and they are all positive. Another impressive feature of the 1218 is the ability to load pictures off of several types of cards for digital cameras, just pop in the memory stick,card,etc and boom.....again very nice.
I could go on about the many features that I have not mentioned like double-sided printing (great) but I won't. In my opinion if you are in the market for a great photo/text printer for under $1000 you cannot go wrong with the 1218.
