A Thinking Man's Laptop...

Nov 03 '99

Last August, my father got me an IBM Thinkpad iSeries laptop as my H.S. Graduation gift. We finally decided on it after trying out other brands of laptops, namely Compaq and Toshbia.

I've had my laptop for more than three months now and still am very, very satisfied with it. It has become my best friend- my own little "Matrix."

The Thinkpad's physical design is very simple and effective. It's not ultra-fancy like the iMacs (tangerine's my favorite color) and it also boasts a brilliantly-enhanced monitor display. Perfect for internet surfing.

I use it primarily for internet surfing and writing research papers. On the subject of World Wide Web, it is highly effective- I've NEVER had a system failure (error) of any sort (even if I'm on an Ethernet server) and although the system only has 266 Mhz, it is a very fast computer for someone like me who is constantly switching around programs/applications and opening/closing new "windows."

Simply put, program conflicts doesn't exist in the realm of my Thinkpad.

Sound quality is just fine. It's not the best but simply said, it's good enough for me. A nice feature about it is that the computer does not have to be turned on to listen to the music from the CD-ROM drive.

Battery life for the laptop is so-so. A fully-recharged battery (100%) can last approximately 4 hours.

Currently, my Thinkpad has only 32 MB of RAM but it can be upgraded all the way up to 128 MB of RAM and I do believe that you can also upgrade the Mhz up to 300-400 Mhz.

Of course, the Thinkpad has some cons- after a prolonged usage of it, it tends to get very, very hot on the bottom of the unit since there isn't a fan coolant system there. That actually worries me a bit but so far there hasn't been any suspected problems derived from the excessive heat.

Most importantly, this Thinkpad can serve you very, very well as long as you use it with care- I treat mine as if it's my own child, my prodigy.
