I'm a writer and a formerly active "bone head scientist". However I still go out and kick rocks and I needed a new laptop that could keep up with me in some rough use. It needed to be fast, reasonable compact, lighter than most and economical. I really decided to do my home work before I bought this time. The Compaq was clearly the only laptop that met my needs on a scale of 9 out of 10.
The High-capacity LiIon battery gives me an honest 3 hours of conservative run time and the DVD CD Player was a pleasant bonus, and it out performs my sons crappy Gateway that has a hardware based DVD! The 14." TFT Color Display is nearly as good as my Macintoch G3 PowerBook (which is rated #1), but the G3 is heavier than an Anvil! I love the touch pad, this is my fourth laptop with one and I HATE those rubber eraser pointers! It's much easier to use, believe me. The JBL 3D sound is fabulous and it allows me to listen to Mozart or Van Halen to my hearts content in the middle of the Montana Bad Lands on a dig or in that cheezy motel room. By the way, Compaq offer additional LiIon batteries direct, for half the price of the "after market guys" and I got mine in 2 days! That a way Compaq :-)
As a desk top replacement, the Presario 1693 is all I ever need when working on a feature article or writing up the documents from a research project. It was the only laptop I could find that had a really great feeling keyboard, as a writer that's my numero ono requirement!
My only complaint is an occasional system lock-up, TOTALLY Winblows 98's
fault (WHEN are you going to come up with a stable Mac like OS ...Microsoft! Geez!). Compaq has goofed here too though, as there is no easly way to restart the computer because the on/off button in NOT MECHANICAL. So I've found you have to yank the battery out to force a shut down.
Otherwise, I love you Compaq Presario 1693, your almost a Mac G3 PowerBook, but a lot lighter and cheaper. Two thumbs up, . . right Ebert?
