12:00 am :amount of transfer completed 97% of 30 meg file
12:05 am :transfer aborted due to technical failure.
I almost destroyed my PC after that happened to me not once, not twice but at least 4 times. And this was back in the days of having a 56K modem. Seriously downloading files of the internet was hell. Yes, programs like Gozilla, Get Right etc, came out, but even using them I would get problems. For example, downloading a trailer for Star Wars I was seemingly connected to a site which resumes downloads, and got cut of at 75%. When I tried to resume it gave me errors saying it couldn't resume because the file was corrupt...that was the last straw, time to find a new way to transfer files.
FTP:File Transfer Protocol, provided me with the answer. I started off using Cute FTP. Just because, it was the most popular and well known, so I guessed it would be (if not the best) one of the best. Boy was I wrong, and I didn't even realise this until I had used it for about 2 years. Then I discovered FTP Voyager.
Don't get me wrong Cute Ftp is easy to use and certainly works well with small files (not more than 10MB). But when it comes to big files it gives problems on resumes sometimes. Also the fact that you can't have more than one session going at a time unless you open another cuteftp window. This takes up tons of resources and crashes quite frequently.
Voyager uses a simple technique whereby downloads or uploads, are handeled by small transfer windows. Then in the main window you can disconnect from the site and start a new session on another site. Thereby your not using the main program for each upload and (or) download. Also once you have everything downloading you can close the main window. Usually a transfer window tends to take 3MB in memory, compared to the 10+ MB taken by each Cute FTP window.
The Scehduler which comes with it is also very useful. You can create a session to be carried out any time, just input site info and time. The scheduler can also perform tasks every week or month at a certain date. Very useful when you want to update your personal website using ftp every month, but are too lazy or forget to upload the files.
The Sync can be used to update files on a ftp server which only have dates newer than the ones on the server. So, you can update your website pages and use sync to only upload updated ones. Another upside is the fact thats its one of the only FTP clients to work perfectly with Netscape Proxy Server (Socks v5) client.
The interface isn't too complicated. If you are novice user the help guides you through everything, making everything very straight forward. For the experienced users, it has excellent features such as, bookmarks, detailed connecting settings, support of "server@port", and more. And check this feature out, you can open two instances of the program and connect to two different servers and move files directly between the two without downloading to your local machine!
I would say the only slight downside is the price. It is not expensive at $50 for a 2 year liscence, but might be a little too much for a moderate user. Still, the price includes all upgrades in that time.
