CompUSA is hell on earth
Oct 12 '00
CompUSA is a horrible place, where the staff is unfriendly, undermanned, undereducated, and impossible to locate. On several trips there, I had the following miserable experiences:
- I was grossly overcharged for "commodity" components. I wanted a generic cd-rom drive and a mini-tower case, for which I ended up paying a nearly 60% markup. Why did I pay it? The unbelievable frustration of the rest of the experience had me throwing my hands up in the air, just about ready start attacking randomly, and figured it was worth the $100 to stay out of jail.
- It was impossible to find the prices of items. The place is a shambles: items strewn all over the place and more mixed up than after a big sale at Bloomingdales. Nothing is near its original nametag. In fact, a sound card I picked out was under in a section for a *different* sound card. But the prices were very different. I thought I was picking out the value $20 card, but I had in fact a $100 card. That's if there is a price. On many items, the boxes are opened, handled, and there are no price tags at all. And if you think the friendly salespeople will help you--forget it! They are nowhere to be found (though I saw large groups of them through the door to the back room, I don't know what they were doing there...conducting a Fight Club?).
- Missing salespeople were also dumb. I saw one nearly running through the section I was in so I started running too, and positioned myself next to him. I asked where they kept the disk drives. He pointed me one way. On his next fly-by, he pointed me another way. Ultimately, I founded them nestled in yet another area.
- I won't bother going on. I ended up blowing $100 in the overcharging. But if you're thinking of buying a computer...think again! There is no worse place on earth than Compusa. You're better off with almost ANYTHING.
