| voodoo3475's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP |
I recently was looking into a new computer and I had it all set out. 45gb hard drive, 12x4x32x CD-RW, 48x CD-ROM Drive, Asus A7V Motherboard, Soundblaster Live!, 128mb of memory. a 14gb tape drive, a 900mhz AMD Athlon, and an nVidia GeForce 2 GTS. The problem was, the Athlon and the GeForce 2. These two components have had many problems recently and have had crashed when put together. So instead of buying the GeForce I looked at the next best thing the Voodoo 5 5500 AGP. Once I bought it and put into my computer I was very pleased with its results.
Voodoo vs. nVidia
I'll say it right here, right now...nVidia is the better card. BUT...the Voodoo had many things that the GeForce does not have. I'll name couple then break each down into a technical standpoint. A PCI version, excellent FSAA, and compatibility with most systems.
PCI
Well, not much to say here. There is a PCI version of Voodoo 5 5500 that is just about the same as the AGP version, except different colored box. That is one thing that nVidia does not offer.
FSAA/Anti-Aliasing
What is this FSAA/Anti-Aliasing you're talking about?
Well FSAA is a type of application to software that takes off ragged edges in games. The good thing about it is that it doesn't require any additional software to run it. So just about any game that operates on Windows could use FSAA. I play a lot of Tribes, and I love the anti-aliasing soooooo much. The problem with FSAA is that it supposedly slows down performance. I haven't experienced any drag, but that's also because of the fast processor. I believe that the GeForce has FSAA, but I've also heard that it isn't nearly as good as the Voodoo's. The FSAA alone is a reason to buy the Voodoo.
Compatibility
There has been many conflicts between the Athlon and the GeForce, which is the main reason why I bought the Voodoo. The Voodoo 5 is a more stable card and so far I've had no major problems so far. Some of the problems are, Windows won't install, many video conflicts and crashes, and lots of other things. PC Gamer had listed some of the problems and it made me change my mind. AMD and GeForce are working on drivers to try to fix this, so far, not so good.
Well then...
Well the Voodoo is a very good card and if you end up buying, you will be pleased with it's performance (well at least I am). If you have a PIII I would recommend the nVidia to you, if you have PCI I recommend the Voodoo 5 5500 PCI to you, and if you have an Athlon, go with the Voodoo 5 5500 AGP. This is a card, you don't want to miss out on.
