| starrion's Full Review: NetGear SB104 Network Starter Kit Networking Hub |
So you wanna be a network administrator. Well pilgrim, you're gonna need to know alot about computers, about IRQs, and your network protocols.....
No you don't. Not anymore
Home networking used to be what "Alpha Geeks" (the smartest of a given pack) used to do when they weren't playing with osciliscopes and soldering irons. They had to know about how to set jumpers and wade through their system to find free resources to use for their network cards. But with this kit you can do what took them a whole day in about an hour. (25 minutes if you really know what you're doing) Start by putting the two (up to four)PCI network cards in the respective computers. Power up. Go into the operating system and install the drivers. Reboot. Plug the cables into the hub and into the computers. Finally give the systems an IP address and you're done. The instructions are pretty easy to follow. There are no more jumpers- the cards find their own resources. There is no more wire lash ups, this is a complete and very reliable kit. Netgear is excellent, I use the hub on the road when I am teaching classes. Then on the weekends I bring it home and wire some systems together for a brawl on Half-Life or some other mindlessly violent game.
This is easy!
The best thing is that everything is included and you can easily add two more systems for about $25 bucks apiece. You get drivers, two 10/100 network cards, a 10base-T hub and cables. Even the cables they include are pretty good quality. Netgear has worked on every PC I have tried it on, even real low-end machines that seem to be incompatible with everything. You can even use all the components and connect at 100mb by using a 100MB hub. (The included one only allows for 10MB- but that's fine for home use) For sharing fast internet connections, working on projects together, or letting your best bud know you love him by putting a crossbow bolt through his back from across the arena, Netgear cannot be beat.
