| fiona32's Full Review: Gateway Essential 500 |
Well, not really. But we do have a genuine mutual admiration society going these past 2 weeks. It does everything I ever dreamed I'd want in a new computer, and I treat it with care and respect. (i.e., no coffee on the desk, no playing around with its innards on the Control Panel when I still am a novice). I have a healthy respect for this wonderful machine, my Gateway Essential 550 Computer.
It's a Pentium III with 64mg RAM, 10GB hard drive, 56K modem, speakers that blow me away, a microphone yet, and a keyboard that I actually get excited about; its got so much. This computer has enough bells and whistles to keep me happy sitting here for hours. For the first time, I have both Microsoft Works and Word, and a browser that gets me anywhere I need to go - quickly. I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I was able to get it for $964.00, plus tax and delivery.
And it included an Epson Stylus 440 Printer, (with TWO count'em, TWO cartridges for color, instead of one). I learned in my shopping around that a one cartridge color printer, especially some of the $99 ones, with a $40 rebate offered, would definitely not factor out as a wise purchase. The first time I'd have to purchase a cartridge, I'd have already paid back the rebate. And when I was told that one-cartridge printers just mix all the colors to make black, (which is generally all I need), it would be used up in no time.
The computer is humming along quietly, I am still astounded at the speed of connection and overall operation, and to top it off, I have a free year of AOL thrown in! Being one of the dying breed of AOL lovers, I will have to close out the account I've had for 4 years and start a new one, but that's certainly not a problem. (Plus I hate my hastily thought-up screen-name that I've been stuck with since 1996). Had no idea it could be a life-time handle when I made up an off-the-cuff name in 20 seconds back then.
I feel that Gateway rates right up there at the top, in terms of product performance, warranty, tech support, the software that is included, and all the add-ons that are available as my computer and I deepen this relationship. I would recommend this to anyone who is not a beginner, per se, but definitely not a computer expert. This is a friendly reliable machine!
