Update: Recently, this product was taken off the market. Virus updates are still available for registered users, but the program itself is no longer in development and cannot be downloaded from the company web site.
---------------------
When the Love Bug struck InoculateIT PE came through for my company when Norton and McAfee could not. The first email containing the virus arrived at my company at 9am, addressed to an engineer who no longer worked for us. A well-meaning individual opened the email in order to determine if it was important enough to be forwarded on.
Within seconds, emails containing the virus were in every mailbox in the company, and the outgoing mail queue was completely bogged down. Approximately twenty five computers were infected, and the network servers lost many files as well. Network systems had everyone shut down their PC.
Our Network Administrator quickly went to the Norton web site; however, it was so bogged down with traffic, that he was unable to obtain any information. Therefore, he called a meeting of all the network staff as well as a few key software engineers in order to assess the damage. One of my fellow engineers and I studied the source code of the virus in order to determine what kind of damage to look for. Then we formulated a game plan.
The first course of action was to shut down the network servers. This meant that none of us had access to the Internet. Next, we walked through the building and marked all of the infected computers. When the last PC was marked and I had left for the afternoon, we still had no solution in sight.
As soon as I arrived home, I was able to get online; however, the Norton and McAfee web sites were still too bogged down. Therefore, I went to the InoculateIT PE web site to see if they had a handle on the situation. Not only did they have an answer to our problem, but their site was running as fast as ever. I was able to phone my Network Administrator and point him to an easy answer. A few short hours later, the virus had been eradicated and all was well.
My Network Administrator was surprised to learn that a free antivirus program had solved our problems when the software that he had paid good money for could not. Yes, InoculateIT PE is totally free. It is updated monthly just like its more expensive counterparts, and it works . In addition, the web site is a valuable source of information on just about every virus that is out there.
InoculateIT PE scans the boot sector every time I boot my computer. Then, it offers real-time protection for my files while I work. The only drawback that I have found thus far is that when real-time protection is enabled, the Windows startup sound sputters a bit. Turning off the real-time protection solves that problem.
InoculateIT PE may not be a big name in virus protection; however, it came through for my company when we needed it most. I use it at home, and I strongly suspect that my Network Administrator regrets ever having paid for Norton.
