| 7thChord's Full Review: Artec RW |
I bought this drive back in November.. I think back and say to myself Artec? But I guess I finally wanted into CD-RW. I wanted it at 4x, and I wanted it at a good price. 160$ which is still what it's going for was a steal back in November.
I've yet to make one coaster with this drive out of 40-50 burns. Of course, I isolate it on it's own IDE channel and enable DMA. I've burned straight from IDE and SCSI CD-Roms as well as IDE and SCSI hdds, and I've never had to update the firmware.. The general well used adaptec software is very adequate and versatile enough you shouldn't need anything else and works well with the drive. I believe the deluxe version offers such things as being able to burn records.. something you can already do with some shareware that's out there.
It reaches and maintains consistently it's 4X write according to the little tell tell adaptec software during burning, and the 2MB buffer is plenty for 4x writing. With what little rewriting I do, it gets the job done.
It's CD read is so so if not sub par for 24x according to CDSpeed 99. But I don't really notice, because I don't use it for this. It's stability and performance are in its burning.
There are probably better 4x/4x RWs out there. But for the price, you're getting a stable drive that still performs. I have had no problems with 80 minute Memorex CD-Rs, which are the only CD-Rs I've used. So it can probably handle some 80 minute high capacity CD-Rs, where other CD-RW drives can not.
This is really a no-name company in the sense, and my drive certainly might not be indicative of others out there. I haven't see any reviews for it..surprised I saw a space here for it. So if people are having problems or feel their drive has not performed up to expectations, it would be nice to see them posted. The support for the product also seems good. I've called and talked to Kim ( I believe that is her name) who handles product sales just to make sure this company is there and to see how friendly they seem toward customers. I also believe much the way Hi-Val offers pioneer drives such as the 303s, this is a Phillips 4x/4x/24x drive in disguise, though I don't recall seeing Phillips mentioned anywhere on the box or the product. So I could be wrong. It may be generic looking, but it isn't generic running. I give it 4*s. 5 if I absolutely believed or had more evidence that all drives would perform as mine does.
