The big guys at Apple knew what they were doing when they said "Let's offer a product so cool-looking that people will actually buy it as an impulse purchase!"
Because that's what happened to me.
I was excited to find out that my local Sears had two iBooks in stock, and didn't even have them on display yet. So my friend and I left work right after I got off the phone with the Sears salesman and drove down to the store (mind you this was right in the middle of the workday).
When we arrived we got to play with it for about an hour (it comes fully charged) and it was sharp. We were smitten like kittens. Another trip back to the house to get the major credit card and we were back in flash, purchasing the first two iBooks in the Shreveport/Bossier area (blueberry nonetheless).
It really is a mouth-watering design. It looks a lot like a compact, but there's nothing feminine about it. It runs at a reasonably fast 300 mhz and has plenty of room on the hard drive for a few of your favorite apps (not all of them though). I personally wouldn't use it as the primary computer, but it makes a perfect secondary one. I use it to do web sites, draft letters, put together presentations, and play some games when I'm on the road. Sometimes on my lunch break I'll sneak out of the office and go outside and play on it. It's so non-mainstream as far as computers go!
It comes with a USB connection, modem connection and RJ-45 network connection built right in. The screen is razor-sharp. The keyboard is full-sized. The battery life is good, I'd rate it at about 4 hours (it claims 6). It's also put together very well as I once dropped it off the top of my car onto the concrete and it didn't miss a beat. And of course, even if it is just a mental thing, everything seems to run better on a Mac! There are some drawbacks, like the single speaker, no floppy disk drive, only 32 MB or RAM and lack of a lot of software, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. I would recommend a RAM upgrade however (I upped it to 96 and it's great).
So, as a secondary computer, I'd recommend it. As a primary computer, I wouldn't. As a toy for techno-geeks, it's a must-have. The gee-whiz factor is excruciatingly high and everyone will envy you. Cheers to the iBook!
