| xymox_1's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 2000P Inkjet Printer |
I must admit, I have never been a big fan of Epson printers - I always thought the HP's did a better job for the money. But after seeing this machine in action, I may have to change my opinion!
The 1270 is Epson's latest photo printer, which means that it uses 6 colors instead of the traditional 4 to give you better blending and toning. While this will slow the printer down a bit (it has more colors to mix) it will improve such things as skin tone, metallics and anything else that uses a continous tone. And this printer does an exceptional job in that area. The photos that came out of it were very realistic and professional looking, especially when printed on Epson's special papers. One thing that contributes to this quality is the size of the ink droplets - Epson finally learned from HP that you can effect print quality by regulating the size of the drop as much as you can by putting more drops down. While dpi isn't everything, a high dpi combined with other advances can be. And now that Epson has both, customers will be happy.
Another advance Epson has made with this machine is the noise level. I always hated Epson's old cranky machines that could wake up the whole house. And while this is not as whisper quiet as the HP machines, you will be hard pressed to hear it the next room over.
The printer takes paper up to 13x19 for doing full 11x17 bleeds (you can by special paper where the edges tear off) and output does look best on the Epson papers. Luckily they have a very wide range available from matte to glossy, large to small and most things in between. The matte paper is superb, as is the glossy. Heck, it's all great! They even have a neat feature built in to the software where you can tell the printer what type of image you want to print - sepia, nature, regular, etc. and it will adjust accordingly. You can also buy a $40 adapter that will let you use rolls of photo paper in the printer for an even closer to professional look.
The 1270 sells for about $500 and works with both Windows and Macintosh machines through parallel and USB connections. If you have an Apple G4 you are in luck - the cover will match your computer.
All in all I highly recomend this printer to anyone looking to print professional quality images. It really is great, and that is quite the compliment coming from a die hard HP user.
