Adaptec Easy CD Creator 3.5c is not the newest CD-Recording/Copying program from Adaptec, but it is a worthy title nonetheless. I have copied and created over 100 CD's using this program with my Plextor 8x20 and have never produced a coaster.
Compatible with Win9x, NT4, and Win2k, CD Creator should please just about everyone. However, Adaptec does not officially support CD Creator 3.5 under Win2k. Fortunately, they do provide a patch and some relatively easy instructions on how to get complete functionality under this OS. Almost all of my burning is done under Windows 2000 Advanced Server and the process is as reliable and as quick as under NT4 or Win98.
Easy CD Creator consists of essentially two separate programs: CD Copier Deluxe and Easy CD Creator. CD Copier Deluxe is for (you guessed it) copying CD's. If you have two CD drives, put the source CD in your CD-ROM drive and the blank CD in your CD-R/w, select Copy, and then you're all set. It is a very quick and intuitive process. Should you have only a CD-R/W drive, you can copy your source CD to the hard drive first and then burn a disc. This takes a little longer, but the end results are the same.
The one caveat to CD copying is not so much a problem with program itself as it is a result of copy protection. For those of you interested in "backing up" your games like Dungeon Keeper2 and Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, you will run into some trouble. Electronic Arts (among other companies) employs a program called SafeDisc that makes creating perfect copies of a program nearly impossible. However, that is not to say that it can't be done. Various sites on the Net (www.gamecopyworld.com for one) have patches and instructions to allow you to back up well over 90% of the games available. Some of these are a little tricky, but most are easy enough for a newbie.
The CD Creator program allows a user to create an audio or data disc by either using a wizard or an Explorer like interface that allows the user to drag and drop files onto the blank CD. The process is very straightforward and novices should be recording like a pro in no time flat. Should a user want to create multiple copies of a given CD, s/he can create a disc image onto the hard drive for later use. Also, you can design your own CD case booklet with CD Creator and list whatever songs/files you have on your CD there.
Furthermore, Easy CD Creator comes with an audio cable to hook up to your stereo and quite a few programs to help you make the most of your recordings, including a program to help take the hiss and background noise out of records should you want to copy those onto CD. The program works fairly well, but is not perfect. Sometimes a few audio anomalies still make their way onto the final soundtrack, but overall it is a very solid effort.
