Network Solutions used to be one of the few entities that was able to monopolize a significant part of the world of the web. No more. Network solutions now has to compete with rival doman registration sites. Furthermore, many other web sites now offer to perform registrations with Network Solutions at a lower rate just in order to build relationships with users.
A great browse
I'll give Network Solutions this: they've done a great job updating their web site's interface. It used to be that Network Solutions had one of the most old-fashioned, hard to use web sites around.
Of particular use is the domain name search. Now, there are plenty of places to check to see whether a domain name is being used, but some of those are not as reliable as the one at Network Solutions. When I search for unused domain names at Network Solutions, I know for a fact that they're available.
Don't let them host!
What's not so great at Network Solutions are the packages they offer for web hosting. With their fill-in-the-blank web page design packages, you'll ensure that your website blends in nicely with all the rest, not receiving too much attention.
One better solution out there is Yahoo. Yes, Yahoo. For $14.95 a month, you get extremely reliable hosting with a good basic package of tools to help you manage your website. If you take them on as your host, they register your domain name for FREE, giving you ownership of the domain name. Furthermore, they'll re-register your domain name for you, at no cost to you, for as long as you want the site.
There's nothing really wrong with Network Solutions. It's just that they've failed to keep up with the competition because they're used to not having to compete at all. Their attitude seems to be to just sit back and wait for suckers to pay for their domain registrations when they just don't have to.
It's the economy, stupid!
It boils down to this: you could pay Network Solutions $35 every year just to keep your domain name, or you could get it registered for free elsewhere. I can't remember the last time I came upon a decision so easy to make.
