HP stands for helpful people

Feb 09 '00

Do you have any idea how amazing it is to get a smart, knowledgeable, pleasant person at a help desk? On the first try, yet!

Yes, I was shocked too, and just so relieved that I wanted to propose the guy for sainthood on the spot.

If you can hear me, Larry on the Hewlett-Packard help desk, I just want to say: "I'm here for you, buddy. If you ever need a reference or a few bucks, just call!"

Larry saved me from Internet cable hell. The problem he fixed in 15 minutes flat wasn't even a computer problem. I had been unable to connect to my Internet cable for many, many days and had been on hold with that company's brand new help desk "techs" from early in the morning until late at night. I was exhausted; I was on the verge of despair; and, yes, I was fighting back tears. For I only called Larry after cable help guys told me my computer was "coming apart."

The fact that the machine was but 3 months old was irrelevant, they said. It didn't have long to live and that is why I couldn't connect to their service.

Well, that wasn't it at all. Rather, one of the 13 or so cable "help" people with whom I had spoken had told me to type in an incorrect code in a box that told the computer where to look for the cable connection.

Larry not only figured this out in minutes, but also tried to call the cable guys for me to try to get the code straightened out. (He couldn't get through to them. But, hey, I never said he was Superman.)

My HP seems to be a fine computer. It's a Pentium III Pavilion 8575C. It has many excellent features and was nearly $500 less than a comparable Gateway. But in my book, the most persuasive reason for getting one is the over-the-top tech support.

It's not something you often think of in a computer store or when you're ordering online. But if you have a problem and don't have oceans of time and patience to deal with inexperienced, inept help desk people, you will be awfully happy to have HP's support.

Thanks again Larry!
