| Naughtius's Full Review: Iomega Zip 250 External SCSI Drive |
Man, do I love my Zip 250 drive. Of course, it has its flaws, which I'll be sure to mention, but I believe the pros outweigh the cons. Here's why.
The cons: When my Zip 250 reads 100 MB disks, it reads and writes much slower than my 250 disks. It also seems to read slower on the 100's than my Zip 100 will on the same disks. I have been told that the reason for this is because the drive heads are smaller on the 250 than the older 100 drives, and said drive heads have to make more passes over the disk in order to read it correctly, thus the slowdown. I have had some difficulty acquiring 250 media from my local vendors. That's it.
The pros: BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. This makes a big difference to me. So what if it's a little (and I mean just a little) slower? The fact that I can use all my 100 disks without having to reformat them is a godsend. I also like the fact that it's portable and lightweight, the parallel interface is easy to deal with (I have a laser printer running through mine), and the fact of the matter is, it's durable. Very durable. My bad boy's been running almost non-stop for the past year (making LEGAL mp3s and such, OK?), nary a hiccup to be found.
So let's recap: Backwards compatible, easy to install, works with other parallel/SCSI peripherals, durable and reliable, vs. slower read/write on 100's and difficulty in locating media. If you're into the speed factor, the cons may outweigh the pros slightly. But if you're like me, a user that counts on reliable, easy to use, top of the line removable storage, this is the product for you.
