The Bottom Line Avoid FreeCreditReport.com and ConsumerInfo.com
I saw a commercial for this dot-com on TV not too long ago and the promise of getting my credit report for free online interested me so I decided to give it a shot.
I can say with all honesty, so far, I am disappointed with their service because I have yet to receive my free credit report plus I am worried that my credit card will be charged $69.95 at the end of this month.
When I signed up for my free credit report the site took me to another credit service and in order to get my free report from them I had to sign up for a 30-day trial offer to their service. Of course you can cancel at any time after signing up, but the problem is that in order to cancel you have to have your account number, which does not arrive until three days later. What is the problem in that you ask?
Your cancelled service is prorated from the date of cancellation which means if I started the service on March 1, 2001 and cancelled my service on March 5, 2001 (the same day I receive my account number) I am charged the four days it was active. What a rip-off!!!
However, the service says you can call a number and give them your social security number over the phone and they can cancel you immediately. Well I don’t give that kind of information out over a public phone line (and yes the internet site was secured too).
The service is so secured that they send a password to your email and a separate one to your mailing address. You need both passwords to access your information. Even after I got both passwords, I still could not view my credit report online like the commercials and website promises. I still had to order it and it would take another 4-5 days to receive it. This means that I would be out 15 days at least during the so-called “free” trial offer.
I did send an email the very same day I signed up to get my credit report to cancel my service, and that was the only time I got a quick response. You see, once I got the account number and tried to cancel my service, I have yet to get a reply back confirming the cancelled service.
Avoid FreeCreditReport.com and ConsumerInfo.com
