I don't know about you, but I like to bake. I don't bake often but I like the entire process of baking, from mixing the batter, to letting the pans cool, to decorating the final product. What I don't like is getting the cake from the kitchen to a friend's home and I don't have anywhere to store my cake to prevent staleness. I have a rectangular cake pan with a cover but I can't decorate the sides of my cakes if I use that for transportation. It's somewhat easy to find generic round cake servers on the market but the rectangular size presents difficulty.
The Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker has solved those problems for me. Not only is it rectangular, but I don't worry about the cake sliding around, getting smashed beyond recognition in transport. My cakes also don't go stale. They tend not to last long enough to get stale in the first place but that's another issue.
To be completely upfront and honest, I'm a *former* Tupperware consultant. I became a consultant because I believe in Tupperware products and I was looking for a few extra dollars each month. I'm not trying to sell anything here to anyone reading this review - I'm inactive so I couldn't even if I wanted to! I just want to share with readers that the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker (formerly known as the Bake 'N Take) is a great product.
Colors and Sizes
The Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker comes in one size. Its dimensions are 17" x 11.25" x 6". It holds a two layer 9 x 13 sheet cake (1/4 sheet) or 18 cupcakes.
I have only seen this item offered in one color scheme: a Lacquer Blue base with a Sheer Natural cover.
Features
The Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker consists of two parts, a base and a cover. The base is a bright blue color and it has two built in handles, one on each of the two short sides. These handles are provided to help you carry the tray when the cover is not attached.
The base itself has two sides. One is recessed with indentations to hold 18 cupcakes or muffins in place. This is very handy for transporting these types of baked goods but I have two complaints about this side of the base. First, who bakes cupcakes and muffins in quantities of 18? I always end up with two dozen cupcakes from my recipes and either one dozen or two dozen muffins. Second, I find it difficult to get this side 100% clean when I hand wash the base. I've actually gone over it with q-tips as if I'm detailing a car!
The other side of the base it flat but you can see where the cupcake holders are on the other side. The edge of the base is "rolled" which gives it a finished appearance. Supposedly this makes it easier to slides cakes onto the tray but I've never had a problem with cakes on other cake trays without rolled edges. The edge is low enough that it's not in the way when you're slicing the cake. Speaking of slicing cakes, the base to my Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker shows no signs of knife scratches to date.
The cover for the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker is sheer (not clear). It's easy to see what's inside. Along the edges, there are 7 opaque stripes about .25" thick which dress up the cover.
The cover attaches to the base by fitting the cover on top of the base, inserting a tab into a slot on each short side of the base and sliding a clip down over the notch at the bottom. Each tab and slot are identical so you don't need to worry about accidentally fitting Tab A into Slot D instead of Slot B. The cover is not an air-tight seal but it's enough to keep your cakes from getting stale in less than a day or two.
Built into the top of the cover is a carrying handle with a nice recessed area to fit your hand. I've found that it's easy to balance, even if I only have items on one side of the carrier (such as when I took four cupcakes home). The only possible drawback that I see here has to do with versatility. I'm not sure what the previous design was on the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker, but on the Round Cake Taker, it didn't have the integrated handle. You used a separate Carolier handle which clipped onto the integrated base's carrying handles. It wasn't as stable but you could also invert the cover to use it for a large fruit salad. With an integrated handle, the cover the the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker can only be used as a cover because it doesn't balance by itself when inverted.
Finally, the only other drawback I see to the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker is that it's big. You have to put it somewhere when it's not in use. If you bake a lot or if you find yourself taking cupcakes or smaller sheet cakes to social functions, this is a good product but you'll have to figure out what to do with it for storage.
Other specifications
The Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker is dishwasher safe but I've never attempted to wash mine in the dishwasher. It's a large size so it doesn't fit well in the dishwasher with my plates and it also doesn't fit securely.
It is covered by Tupperware full lifetime warranty against chipping, cracking, breaking and peeling. What this means is that if any of the above occurs within reason, you get a replacement at no cost. If you leave your cake taker in the driveway and run over it with your car, I'm sorry but you're out of luck.
Should you need a replacement, the mold numbers are as follows:
3861 - base
3862 - cover
3786 - tabs
After saying all of that, I have never had a customer need a warranty replacement of any part of the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker.
Favorite Uses
Obviously, my favorite use for the Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker is to transport and store cakes.
I store my Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker when not in use in an upstairs closet. I have overly generous kitchen cabinets but even so, there's not enough room to store this cake taker in the kitchen, especially since I use it only a few times a year. My other favorite use is as a tote to transport small items upstairs along with the cake taker such as Matchbox cars, paperback books and a box of band-aids.
Where to Buy
The Tupperware Rectangular Cake Taker is available for purchase through Tupperware's website at www.tupperware.com and through Tupperware mall showcase kiosks. You can also purchase it at Amazon.com and Target carries the brand although I haven't seen this particular item at my local store.
My personal recommendation would be to contact a consultant through the Tupperware webpage. If you order directly from a consultant (and you do not have to host a party to do this), the prices are lower than over the Internet or at Showcase. Internet (and Showcase) prices are set by Tupperware and there is a markup.
