I've been mulling over getting a digital camcorder, bit have put it off for a couple of reasons; one being I didn't know the difference in MiniDV and Digital8. Pertaining to that, I did not have a clue of the repercussions of choosing one over the other. After reading this review, it all seems fairly clear now.

"The Sony 230 digital8 is $509 street price and the lowest end Sony miniDV camcorder is about $930...that's almost like buying two Digital8 camcorders for the price of one miniDV camcorder."

That's only true if you insist on buying a Sony. You can purchase a Mini DV unit from Panasonic or JVC for less than $100 more than the price you quoted for this Digital8. With Sony, you're basically paying for a name.

Hi8 vs MiniDV (Reply to this comment)

Sony makes fine products. I wish they would stop this on-going nonsense with their own proprietary formats. It goes back to Beta and I swear there must be some deep seated resentments in the company over the failure of that format that causes them to pop out new formats of their own even when it is clear that the market is already moving in a particular direction: memory stick is just the most recent example. Get over it Sony! I didn't consider a Sony camcorder in my recent purchase because I don't want to support this kind of behavior.
