| lifo195's Full Review: JMTek 256MB USBDrive (UD-256) Hard Drive |
For people who needs storage and have seen all the usb drive devices, you may see all these reviews, but not up to date and rate older usb 1.1 usb drives. Hope this helps people buying usb drive.
Why buy a usb drive or memory?
It is faster than a floppy even when used in a usb 1.1 system. This is very convenient and small. Great for the business environment, and sharing files between co-worker computers. As a consultant I recommend this as a backup for people who have important Excel, and Word files. Since these files are small. But remember anything can fail, a usb drive is only a backup, don't think just keep important files on this device.
Speed Varies with Specs:
I found out that if your computer is fast transfer speeds can improve. Such as faster processor, and hard drive. Because on friends computer around 300 MHz transfer rates slow down even usb 2.0.
Results and speed test:
My pc uses 2.0 GHz AMD with a Western Digital 80 gb 8 meg cache drive with an ASUS motherboard with usb 2.0. It took 45 seconds to transfer a 186 mb file to the USB device which is faster than the what they say on the specs of the USBDrive. It comes to around 4.13 MB/sec for the USB drive. Comparable time to M-Systems Disk On Key 2.0 but cheaper. M-systems is supposed to be fast due to its internal ARM processor. Though JMTek doesn't say that it has an internal processor in this device. I haven't tested read speeds, but I tested watching a divx and mpeg-1 file, and it worked without frame loss or glitches, and playing music off it works fine also.
Included with device:
This device comes with neckstrap, and 3ft usb extension cable.

Many specs and manuals:
Funny thing is it comes with an older manual for its usb 1.1 device. The other sheet which is what you see when you buy it says its usb 2.0 device can transfer between 4 mb/sec read and 1 mb/sec write. The one I have is usb 2.0 version but backwards compatible with usb 1.1.
Cons:
No Software not even on the device. You have to download the password/format/partition utility. Drivers are necessary for win 98 se. Password protection only if software is installed to activate it. This device for some reason heats up quite a bit if you leave it plugged in, I may have to contact customer service. The service and support is web submit only, which is somewhat lousy, but I don't mind.
Where to buy:
If you have a costco membership, then head over to Costco.com and order this online, since that is online item only. Take around 1 week to ship. It may not be the ceapest price, but a reliable source to buy from. Costco's site incorrectly states the specs, and the warranty is only one year not lifetime.
