Spend More Initially For Less Frustration Later

The Bottom Line Look and choose for your MD carefully - it is such an expensive purchase that making the right decision is paramount
The simple rule with MiniDisc players is that the more you spend up front the longer you will be able to comfortably use the machine. Whilst applicable to most electronics, this is especially true for MiniDiscs, as a $300 purchase in 2001 will last you at least 2 - 3 years longer than a $150 colleague. Choose the right MiniDisc player for your purposes though - for instance, if you wish to take your MD on some fairly hectic trips, splash out a little and get a good solid player with at least 40 seconds of anti-shock, and purchase a few accessories such as a holding pack to ensure that things don't go wrong en route. If you just want a simple walkabout extension to your stereo, the Sony MZ-33 is an ideal choice, as it is small, versatile, and easy to use, whilst also economical ($150 - $190).
I would advise that you stick with Sony MD players, the others are good, but Sony products tend to have the durability missing in so many other MD players, especially those by Panasonic. Also, due to the existence of a large number of Sony repair centers, if anything goes wrong with your MD you will be happy that repair will take hours or days rather than weeks.
Silly as it sounds, do get an MD player that you like the look of, not just the sound of - chances are, people off the street are going to want to see the funky item sticking out of your pocket (most often the remote), and it pays to look good, no? Just joking, but if you have the cash - get the look, it also tends to come hand in hand with quality.
