| andrewhmac's Full Review: Canon i 9100 Inkjet Printer |
I have owned several Epson printers and one Canon back in 1997. Since I have done so much printing with Epson's I use them as my benchmark for comparison with this new Canon i9100.
I needed a large format printer, mostly for tabloid size (11x17) outputs of my work. I'm a graphic designer and need to print artwork for presentations that combine illustrations, photography and text.
One beef I had with Epson is that they didn't release a driver for Mac OSX that would enable borderless printing. It worked in OS9 with my Stylus Photo 820, but not OSX. They blame the OS but I guess with 10.2 it's not an issue because Canon sure figured out how to print to the edges. Even with Epson's latest photo 2200 you still can't use all the printer features with OSX. If you are a windows user this is obviously not an issue for you.
So, to get right to the point, this Canon i9100 is fantastic. It's fast, and the design of the product is very nice, in my opinion nicer than the fit and finish of Epson printers. The Epson's use really cheap plastic and are louder. However it's the print quality that counts the most, and Epson's are very good printers.
Photo printing with the Canon is amazing, and yes it really does rival professional photo prints. You will not be disappointed. It is at least as good as the Epson and possibly better.
What other reviewers have stated about using Canon paper is true. While it seems like marketing propaganda that you would have to use their paper to get the best results, it is true. I have printed the same document with Epson and Canon paper and the Canon paper print looked better. Especially when it came to text. On the epson paper it was not as sharp and there was some banding in the photo portion of the document. Although, I did do some printing on Epson's 11x17 photo quality paper with excellent results. It's important to select the right settings when printing as well. Using best quality on photo paper settings when not really using photo paper is a bad idea and probably wastes ink.
Use Canon paper and Canon ink and you will not be disappointed. This is a fantastic product. And it works as promised on Mac OSX so I thank Canon for taking the time to make the software work properly as Epson could not.
As far as paper and ink costs, I think they're about the same as the others (HP, Epson) and while expensive something you have to swallow for outstanding print quality.
